Großheringen

Großheringen is a municipality in the north -east of the county of Weimar and fulfilling part of municipality Bad Sulza. In the resort 128 km long Ilm flows into the Saale.

Geography

Großheringen is located in the district of Weimar area in the northeast of Thuringia on the border with Saxony- Anhalt, about 15 km northeast of the county town Apolda. The Ilm and the Saale flow through the municipality, where the mouth of the River Ilm in the Saale is located directly below the village Großheringen.

To the municipality except the eponymous site include the north of Ilm Thuringian railway located Unterneusulza as well as the well-known for its viticulture Kaatschen - Weichau, located about 2 km on the Saale above the Ilmmündung.

Neighboring municipalities are Bad Sulza, Schmiedehausen and thorn - Camburg Castle in Thuringia and Naumburg ( Saale) and Lanitz - Hassel- valley in Saxony- Anhalt.

History

Großheringen was first mentioned in 874 under the name Heringa.

The place Unterneusulza arose in connection with the Saline activity in the Ilm Valley ( 1623 plant a saline).

In 1949 merged Großheringen and Unterneusulza to the municipality Großheringen. Kaatschen - Weichau was incorporated in 1974.

In Großheringen the sanitary equipment Viega manufactures since 1992 in a large plant piping systems. The resulting trade tax revenue (gross 2008: EUR 3.7 million, 2009: EUR 3.2 million, 2010: 3.7 million euros, equivalent to around 5000 euros per inhabitant compared to a county average of 230 euros per inhabitant) make Großheringen measured at the tax revenue per capita one of the richest municipalities in Thuringia.

Transport links

Due to its location at the intersection of two major rivers Großheringen is perfectly located for a railway junction. The first railway line from Halle / Leipzig to Erfurt ( Thuringia train) through the village was opened in 1846. It runs north and south in the Saale- in the Ilm Valley. Today, it is, inter alia, of the ICE line Dresden - Leipzig - Frankfurt, double track and electrified. 1876 ​​came with the hall track added another important railway line; it branches off in Großheringen of the railway line Erfurt-Leipzig/Halle and runs south in the Saale valley continues through Jena, Saalfeld (Saale ), Kronach and Bamberg to Nuremberg. On 24 December 1935, came into Großheringen the heaviest train accident in the Thuringian history. In this case, 34 people died.

Tourism

Major tourist routes such Saale Cycle Path, Ilm Valley Cycle Route, Saale -Elster -Unstrut Radacht and Wine Route Saale- Unstrut run through the municipality.
