Kastoria (regional unit)

The Prefecture of Kastoria (Greek Periferiaki Eontita Kastoria ) is one of four regional districts of the Greek region of Western Macedonia to the administrative headquarters of Kastoria. Kastoria Prefecture was created in 1941 as a spin-off from the prefecture of Florina. With the administrative reform of 2010, the powers of the prefecture were transferred to the region of Western Macedonia and the greatly reduced by merging municipalities, the Regional District of Kastoria sent since nine MPs in the westmakedonischen Regional Council, has also but no political significance. Kastoria includes the municipalities of Kastoria, Nestorio and Orestida.

Geography

The area Kastoria with the homonymous capital is located in the far west of West Macedonia. In the north of Kastoria is adjacent to the Regional District of Florina, in the south, east and southeast of Grevena and Kozani, in the southwest of Ioannina and Albania to the west.

The region is mountainous and is characterized by a continental climate, with large temperature fluctuations between cold winters and hot summers; in winter can be minus degrees even freeze over the lake.
