Kilkis (regional unit)

Kilkis (Greek Kilkís Κιλκίς ) is one of seven regional districts ( Ez Greek Periferiaki Enotita ) the Greek region Central Macedonia and includes the municipalities of Kilkis and Peonia. The area in 1934 was formed by elimination of the prefecture of Thessaloniki as the prefecture. With the administrative reform of 2010, the powers of the prefecture and were transferred to the Central Macedonia region by merging twelve reduced to two communities; the Regional District sent since three deputies in the zentralmakedonischen Regional Council, has also but no political significance. The only major city of the region with 24 274 inhabitants, is the former capital of the prefecture of Kilkis.

Economy and morphology

The region's economy is almost entirely dependent on agriculture. The main products are wheat, tobacco and cotton. However, the livestock, in a region of growing importance. Due to the soil conditions, the prefecture in relation to other areas of the Macedonia region on very little woodland. The industry plays a very minor role in the region.

Traffic

The National Highway 1 and Highway 1 (E75 ), and the National Road 65 through the Regional District. Moreover, there is a connection to the Macedonian Dojran.
