Lake Wohlen

The Wohlensee is a reservoir in the Swiss canton of Bern, the northwest of the city of Bern, between Herrenschwanden (municipality Kirchlindachstrasse ) and Muhlenberg, and is traversed by the Aare River.

Shape

The Wohlensee is mostly very narrow, so that it is more like a river than a lake. However, the flow rate of the water is very slow, so that there is a fast forward -border silting of the lake.

The Bernese cantonal government gave 1917 the concession to build the power plant. Especially for this, the Trackless Train Gümmenen - Muhlenberg in 1918 set up. When it was started in July 1920 so that after completion of construction to dam the water, disappeared more than 300 hectares of land in the water. 1921 took over the power plant into operation. Today, about 1.5 km downstream is the nuclear power plant Muhlenberg.
