Lancashire

Lancashire [ læŋkəʃər ] is a county in North West England. The county is bordered by the Irish Sea and the county of Cumbria, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside, and the county -free areas of Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen.

Before the local government reform of 1974, the county still bordered on Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire and Cheshire. The area has now been scaled down in order to simplify administration. Since April 1, 1974, the area of Furness part (the former area of Lancashire north of Morecambe Bay) for the neugegliederten county of Cumbria, south-eastern parts were made to Greater Manchester, southwestern parts were to Merseyside. The town of Warrington and the surrounding counties with the villages of Winwick, Croft, Culcheth Risley and were connected to Cheshire. A part of the West Riding of Yorkshire near Clitheroe was connected to Lancashire. In 1998, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen county free bodies ( unitary authorities ), but remained nominally of protocol events, such as for security measures within Lancashire.

Lancashire is divided into several districts. These are Burnley, Chorley, Fylde, Hyndburn, Lancaster, Pendle, Preston, Ribble Valley, Rossendale, South Ribble, West Lancashire, and Wyre.

The population of the county was estimated in 2010 to 1.4493 million. The name itself comes from Lancaster and shire.
