Lastovo

Lastovo / Augusta (Italian: Lagosta ) is an island south of Korčula in Croatia. In the former Yugoslavia under Tito's government, the island was just like Vis for tourists from military reasons not accessible. The island is 9 km long and 6 km wide and mostly mountainous. The highest elevation of the island is 417 meters high mountain Hum. On the slopes of the island of vineyards, olive groves and fruit are grown. The main towns on the island are the ferry and natural harbor Ubli, the island capital of Lastovo Skrivena Luka ( Portorus ) Pasadur and Zaklopatica.

2006, the island Lastovo, as well as the surrounding archipelago was declared a Nature Park Lastovo.

Tourism

For sailors Lastovo is an attractive way station on the road between Split and Dubrovnik. Anchor and mooring opportunities exist in the bays at the western end of the island ( Veli and Mali Lago Lago) and in the ports of Ubli, Pasadur and Zaklopatica. On the island, a hotel, a campground and numerous apartments exist. A clear view of the hills of the island to the south, very little light pollution contribute that Lastovo also for amateur astronomers offers very favorable conditions. Measurements show that the night sky over Lastovo very dark and the visibility of the Milky Way from the island is very good.

A special attraction is the Carnival of Lastovo, which is been verified since 1390.
