Mapfre

Mapfre is a diversified financial services group based in Spain, focusing on the insurance business. The group consists of 240 individual companies, which are the areas of insurance, reinsurance, real estate, financial transactions and various services operating in 38 countries. The majority of the companies are in the holding company Corporación Mapfre, SA summarized, whose shares are traded on the stock exchanges of Madrid and Barcelona. Mapfre is represented in the stock market index IBEX 35 and the Dow Jones Stoxx Insurance. The holding is headquartered Madrid.

Company History

1933, the society as a Mutualidad de Seguros de la Agrupación de Propietarios de Fincas Rústicas de España was founded ( in German about Accident Insurance Fund of the Spanish landowners ). In 1944 an agreement was concluded with the national health insurance, through which the company in 1954, would almost fallen into insolvency due to the sharp rise in medical costs. As of 1955, the company turned to new business areas. The health insurance business was abandoned. From 1970, the current structure, with the car insurance as the parent company and life and industrial insurance evolved. The international expansion took place in 1977, since 1990 Mapfre claims to be the leading insurance company in Latin America. In 2000, a strategic alliance with Caja Madrid ( Madrid Savings Bank ) was closed. Mafpre is in parts still as Mutualidad ( roughly equivalent to the German mutual insurance company ) and thus organized as a non-profit organization. In order to adapt the structure of society to the requirements of the financial markets, a process of demutualization was initiated, which was completed in late 2006. The company is a sponsor in the professional sport of sailing. The Mapfre sailed round the world race in the Barcelona World Race among the Spaniards Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández to second place.
