Mau district

The district Mau (Hindi: मऊ जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Mau ( Maunath Bhanjan ).

Geography

The district Mau is located in eastern Uttar Pradesh and belongs to Azamgarh Division. Neighboring districts are Azamgarh in the West, Gorakhpur in the northwest, Deoria in the northeast, Ballia and Ghazipur in the east to the south.

With an area of 1,713 square kilometers Mau is one of the smaller districts in Uttar Pradesh. The district area is located in the flat and intensively farmed Gangetic Plain and is bordered to the north by the Ghaghara, a major tributary of the Ganges.

History

The district Mau was established in 1988 as an independent district. Previously the area had been part of the district Azamgarh.

Population

According to 2011 census, the district Mau has 2,205,968 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 19 percent. The district Mau is very densely populated: The population density is 1,288 inhabitants per square kilometer with well above the already high average Uttar Pradesh ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). The proportion of the urban population accounts for 23 percent. The literacy rate is 73 per cent higher than the mean of the state (68 percent).

According to the 2001 census are by the inhabitants of the district, 81 percent Hindus. There is also a large Muslim minority of 19 percent. Most Muslims live here in cities: Under the urban population they represent the majority.
