Amethi district

The district Amethi (Hindi: अमेठी जिला; Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj district until 2012 Nagar, Hindi: छत्रपति शाहूजी महाराज नगर ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is Gauriganj, the largest city is Amethi.

The district Amethi lies in the region of Awadh ( Oudh ) in Central Uttar Pradesh. Neighboring districts are Sultanpur in the east, in the south Pratapgarh, Raebareli in the west, northwest and in Barabanki Faizabad in the north. It has an area of 3,070 square kilometers and is divided into five Tehsils Amethi, Gauriganj, Musafirkhana, Salon and Tiloi.

The district Amethi came on 1 July 2010 from parts of the district Sultanpur and Raebareli. From the new Sultanpur district received the three Tehsils Amethi, Gauriganj and Musafirkhana from Raebareli the two Tehsils Salon and Tiloi. Originally, the district Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj was called Nagar. The name referred to the Shahu ( Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj ) said Maharaja of Kolhapur ( 1884-1922 ), who is revered by the Dalit movement because of it has initiated social reforms. The naming of the newly established district corresponded to the program of the then ruling in Uttar Pradesh BSP politician Mayawati were formed, many districts of the state renamed after icons of Dalit movement. Because the district is largely congruent with the constituency Amethi, from the Mayawati's political rival Rahul Gandhi in the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha was elected, was renamed after Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj of the district as a symbolic political success Mayawati. After the BSP but was replaced in 2012 by the Samajwadi Party in the government, the new prime minister Akhilesh Yadav initiated in July 2012 Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj renaming Nagar district in Amethi.
