Mirzapur district

The district Mirzapur (Hindi: मिर्ज़ापुर जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Mirzapur.

Geography

The district Mirzapur is located in southeastern Uttar Pradesh on the south bank of the Ganges. It has an area of 4,405 square kilometers. The northern part of the district area is part of the flat and intensively farmed Gangetic Plain, to the south the terrain rises to the Vindhya plateau on out here that approaches almost to the Ganges. Neighboring districts are in the west of Allahabad, Sant Ravidas Nagar and Varanasi in the north, the east Chandauli, Sonbhadra in the southeast, Singrauli and Rewa in the south to the southwest. The latter two are already part of the neighboring Federal State of Madhya Pradesh.

The district is part of the Division Mirzapur and is divided into five Tehsils Mirzapur Sadar, Chunar, Lalganj and Marihan.

History

After the British had brought the area of Mirzapur end of the 18th century under their control, they annexed it first as part of the district of Benares (Varanasi ) in British India. 1830 Mirzapur became an independent district. At first, he also included the lands of the Maharaja of Benares, who received in 1911 the status of the princely state of Benares. During the British reign, the district part of the ceded and Conquered Provinces was ( 1836 North Western Provinces ), which were in 1902 a part of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. After the Indian independence in 1947 showed the state of Uttar Pradesh from the United Provinces. 1989 sparked the southeastern part of the district Sonbhadra from the district of Mirzapur.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the district Mirzapur has 2,496,970 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 20 percent. The population density is 567 inhabitants per square kilometer below the average Uttar Pradesh ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). 14 percent of the residents of District Mirzapur live in cities.
