Faizabad district

The district Faizabad (Hindi: फ़ैज़ाबाद जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Faizabad.

Geography

The district Faizabad in the region of Awadh ( Oudh ) in Central Uttar Pradesh and is part of Faizabad Division. Neighboring districts are in the north of Gonda, Basti in the northeast, Ambedkar Nagar in the east, Sultanpur in the southeast, southwest and Amethi in Barabanki in the West.

The area of ​​the district is 2,341 square kilometers. The district area is part of the Gangetic plain. The terrain is completely flat and is used for intensive agriculture. History

The area of present-day district Faizabad is at the heart of Awadh region. The city, located in the immediate vicinity of the district capital of Faizabad was Ayodhya in ancient capital of the kingdom of Kosala and is, according to Hindu mythology, the birthplace of Lord Rama. In the 14th century the area came under Islamic rule. At the time of the Mughal Empire, the province ( suba ) Awadh region formed ( Oudh ). 1724 the Nawab ( governor ) Sa'adat Khan made independent and founded the dynasty of the Nawabs of Oudh. Capital was initially Faizabad, Lucknow from 1775 then. 1856 Oudh was annexed by the British.

The district Faizabad was established during the British reign. The district was part of the province of Oudh, in 1902 merged with the North Western Provinces to the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. After the Indian independence in 1947 showed the state of Uttar Pradesh from the United Provinces. In 1995, the district Ambedkar Nagar was formed from the eastern part of the district of Faizabad.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the district Faizabad has 2,470,996 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 18 percent, slightly slower than in Uttar Pradesh funds ( 20 percent). The population density is 1,056 inhabitants per square kilometer with even higher than the already high average of the state ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). Here, the district is defined very rural: only 14 percent of the population lives in cities. The degree of urbanization is thus lower than the average of Uttar Pradesh ( 22 percent). The literacy ratio, which was 69 percent of the average for the state (68 percent).

The population of the district according to the 2001 census, Hindus represent 85 per cent majority. There is also a Muslim minority of 15 percent.
