Gorakhpur district

The district Gorakhpur (Hindi: गोरखपुर जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Gorakhpur.

Geography

The district Gorakhpur is located in northeastern Uttar Pradesh. Neighboring districts are Maharajganj in the north, in the northeast of Kushinagar, Deoria in the east, in the southeast Mau, Azamgarh in the south, Ambedkar Nagar Sant Kabir Nagar to the southwest and the west.

The district covers an area of 3,321 square kilometers and is wholly owned flat Gangetic plain. In the south of the district Gorakhpur is limited by the Ghaghara, a large tributary of the Ganges. In addition, the rivers Rapti and Rohini flow through the district area.

The district Gorakhpur belongs to Gorakhpur Division. It is divided into seven Tehsils Sadar, Chauri Chaura, Sahjanwa, Khajni, Campierganj, Bansgaon and Gola.

History

The district Gorakhpur has existed since the British colonial era. It was created after the Nawab of Oudh ceded the area of Gorakhpur to the British. Originally, the district encompassed a much larger area, which gradually reduced by the creation of new districts: 1865, Basti district was formed ( from the western part of the district of Gorakhpur to this was at the time also the territory of the present-day districts Siddhartnagar and Sant Kabir Nagar ). 1946 split of the eastern part as district Deoria from (including the present-day Kushinagar district ). Finally, it was formed from the northern part of the district Maharajganj Gorakhpurs still 1989.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Gorakhpur has 4,440,895 inhabitants. In terms of population, it is one of the larger districts of Uttar Pradesh. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 18 percent, slightly slower than in Uttar Pradesh funds ( 20 percent). The population density is 1,337 inhabitants per square kilometer with well above the already high average of the state ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). With Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh is home to the twelfth-largest city. Nevertheless, the degree of urbanization is 19 percent below the average of Uttar Pradesh ( 22 percent). The literacy rate is 71 percent higher than the average of Uttar Pradesh (68 percent), but slightly lower than the all-India average ( 73 percent).

The population of the district make Hindus according to the 2001 census, 90 percent clear majority. There is also a Muslim minority of nine percent.
