Jaunpur district

The district Jaunpur (Hindi: जौनपुर जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous city of Jaunpur.

Geography

The district Jaunpur is located in the Gangetic Plain in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Neighboring districts are in the north of Sultanpur, Azamgarh in the northeast, Ghazipur in the east, in the southeast Varanasi, Sant Ravidas Nagar in the south, Allahabad Pratapgarh in the southwest and the west.

The area of the district of Jaunpur is 4,038 square kilometers. The district area is completely flat and is crossed by the Gomti River, a tributary of the Ganges.

The district is part of the Jaunpur Varanasi Division. It is divided into the six Tehsils Sadar, Madiyahun, Machhalishahar, Kerakat, Shahganj and Badlapur.

History

The district Jaunpur was established by the British after they had brought the region under their rule in 1775. During the British reign, the district part of the ceded and Conquered Provinces was ( 1836 North Western Provinces ), which were in 1902 a part of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. After the Indian independence in 1947 showed the state of Uttar Pradesh from the United Provinces.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Jaunpur has 4,494,204 inhabitants. He is one of the most populous districts of Uttar Pradesh. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 14 percent, slower than the average Uttar Pradesh ( 20 percent). The population density is 1,113 inhabitants per square kilometer with well above the already high average of the state ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer).
