Mihai Suba

Mihai Suba ( born June 1, 1947 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian chess grandmaster.

Career

Suba learned to play chess at age 18. He was awarded the IM title in 1975 and the GM title in 1978. He was three times the Romanian national champion (1980, 1981 and 1986). First international attention gained by its SUBA 1982 Zoltan behind Ribli with Gyula Sax shared 2nd place in Băile Herculane. In the same year he was behind Vasily Smyslov Ribli and third in the interzonal tournament in Las Palmas, and thus missed out on the candidate cycle for the World Cup. Suba took each 1st place 1983 ( shared with József Pintér and Vlastimil Jansa ) and 1987 in Timişoara at the Dortmund Chess days, the zone tournament in 1985 in Prague. In 1983 he won behind the winners Mikhail Tal and Rafael Vaganian with the Petrosian and Jaan Ehlvest shared 3rd place in Tallinn.

In 2008 he was with Larry Kaufman chess champion of the elderly; In 2011, he was Senior European Champion in Courmayeur.

His current Elo rating is 2469 (as of January 2010). His best Elo rating was 2580 in July 1986.

Life

On the occasion of a tournament in London fled Suba with his son in 1988 in the West; on 25 August 1988, he applied for political asylum in Britain. In 1989 he played for England in the European Team Championship. He currently lives in Spain (January 2007).

Chess club he plays among others in Romania for the CS AEM Luxten Timişoara.

Hedgehog expert

Suba is a pioneer and expert in the hedgehog position, on which he has published in 2000 the book The Hedgehog. Already in his 1991 book Dynamic Chess Strategy, which became a bestseller, he referred particularly to his contributions to research on the hedgehog position.

In honor of Mihai Suba, who celebrated his sixtieth birthday on 1 June 2007, the round-robin tournament " Royal Tournament " held from June 16 to June 26, 2007 in the Romanian town of Bazna been invited many companions from Suba active tournament career to the are. The 11 participants were: Ulf Andersson, Alexander Beliavsky, Maia Tschiburdanidse, Henrique Mecking, Lajos Portisch, Zoltán Ribli, Andrei Sokolov, Rafael Vaganian Jan Timman, Alexander Khalifman and of course Mihai Suba itself The tournament was won by Khalifman with 7 points, Mihai Suba finished with 4 points the last place.
