Onšov (Pelhřimov District)

Onšov ( German Wonschau, also Wonschow ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located 16 km north-east of Pacov and belongs to Okres Pelhřimov.

Geography

Onšov located in the southwest of the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands. The village lies in the valley of the creek Martinický ( Goldbach ) to a flow loop. To the east rises the Samorim (542 m ) south of the Hura ( 523 m) and in the northwest of Kočihrady ( 561 m).

Neighboring towns are Těškovice, Krčma and Chlovy in the north, Šumplice, Kalná Hať and Hořice in the northeast, Nový Dvůr and Syrov in the east, Senožaty, Pazderna, Mochna and Jiřičky the southeast, Křelovice, Arneštovice and Košetice in the south, Horka, Nová Ves and Buřenice in the southwest, Marti u Onšova in the west and Chyšná, Popovičky Dvůr and Skoranovice in the northwest.

History

Archaeological finds dated to the Hallstatt period. Onšov arose at a medieval trade route that led from Prague via Benešov, Vlašim, Čechtice, Krčmy and Skoranovice through the Valley of Gold creek and on about Humpolec and Jihlava in the Balkans and the Middle East. Probably Onšov was a settlement of Slavnikiden. According to ancient scriptures, Duke of Slavnik Zlic build on the hill above Onšov a wooden church. Attractions

  • Church of St. Martin, it was built in 1256 under Markvart of Onšov in Romanesque style. 1699 was a restoration of the church.
