Opel Laubfrosch

As Opel 4 PS, popularly known as Opel tree frog, cars were called, were produced by Adam Opel KG ( 1929 AG) in Rüsselsheim between May 1924 and June 1931.

The Opel 4/12 PS, the basic model, was the first built in Germany on the assembly line automobile and was produced until 1926. More " tree frogs " were the 4/14 PS 1924-1925, the 4/16 PS 1925-1926, the 4/16 ( 4/18) HP 1926-1930, as well as 4/20 hp, also " 1 called 1 liter ", 1929-1931.

In May 1924 rolled the first Opel 4/12 PS from the tape. In contrast to the then usual automobiles he was small and green instead of big and black and was therefore popularly known as the " Tree Frog". The one-liter engine brought the car to a top speed of 60 km / h

As a body variant Opel offered at 4/12 PS only an open two-seater with so-called " boat-tail " and canvas top. In the later tree frog models, there were other variants:

  • Two seater luxury version: open model with a modified rear (from 1925)
  • Three seater: open 3 seater vehicle ( from November 1924)
  • Four -seater: open 4- seater vehicle (from 1925)
  • Sedan: closed vehicle with three ( from November 1924) or four ( in 1925 ) seats
  • Vans: enclosed vehicle with tailgate ( from November 1924)

4500 Rentenmark cost of the " car for everyone" start of production. Although little unlike other cars, this is still equal to the value of one's home. After 100,000 copies sold in 1930, the Opel was available in a basic version from 1930 Reichsmarks.

The Production Line of Opel tree frog is considered the birth of the "cars of the little man " in Germany.

The frog was a plagiarism of the French Citroën 5CV or 5HP. In processes at the time were sought by Citroën, the accusation of plagiarism by German courts was rejected because of another form of the grille. However, the most striking change was the green paint - Citroën painted the car lemon yellow.

Although the origin of the phrase " The same in green " is not fully understood, it seems quite plausible that it derives from the green livery of the Opel plagiarism.

After a total of 119 484 cars of all versions came in July 1931, the successor Opel 1.2 liter on the market, the predecessor of the Opel P4 and the Opel Kadett.
