Oppido Mamertina

Oppido Mamertina ( in the local dialect: Oppidù or Ofidus ) is a Southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 5364 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria. The community is located about 35 kilometers northeast of Reggio Calabria in the Aspromonte and is the seat of the diocese Oppido Mamertina - Palmi.

History

The church may be due to the ancient Mamerta whose existence (from about 300 BC ) is not safe. 1040 the village was first mentioned by its present name, a few years spätzer keeps the population of the onslaught of the Normans stood until 1056, after all the walls come down. 1783 and 1908 earthquakes destroy large sections of the community. Today the community is an important refuge of the 'Ndrangheta.

Passing through the municipality, the former State Road 111 di Gioia Tauro e Locri (now county road 1) and the former State Road 112 d' Aspromonte (now county road 2).
