Pathum Wan District

Pathum Wan ( Thai ปทุมวัน ) is one of the 50 districts ( Khet ) of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Pathum Wan is located in the eastern part of the city center. It is bordered on the north by Rama I Road ( Thanon Phra Ram 1) and in the south of the Rama IV Road ( Thanon Phra Ram 4). It is one of the central business districts in Bangkok.

Geography

Pathum Wan is bounded on the north by the Khlong Saen Saep, in the east of the railway line Makkasan - Khlong Toei, in the south of the Rama IV Road and to the west by Krung Kasem Khlong Phadung.

The neighboring districts are from clockwise from the north: Ratchathewi (on the other bank of Khlong Saen Saep ), Watthana, Khlong Toei, Sathon, Bang Rak, Pom Prap Sattru Phai (on the other bank of Khlong Krung Kasem Phadung ) and Dusit.

History

The district Pathum Wan was created in 1914. It is named after Wat Pathum Wanaram (Temple of the Lotus Forest ), a Buddhist temple ( Wat ), and the nearby Sra Pathum Palace - (lotus pond palace ). Both plants are due to an arrangement of King Mongkut (Rama IV ). The name goes back to the myriad of lotus flowers, the Khlong Saen Saep at that time covered the water.

Shopping centers

Pathum Wan is well known for its shopping centers. The oldest of these centers is the Siam Center in 1973, which was later expanded by the Siam Discovery Center and was expanded in December 2005, again by the Siam Paragon.

The shopping center with the most visitors is the Maboonkrong Centre ( MBK ). Here you can fashionable clothes, mobile phones and souvenirs at low prices. Connected to the MBK over a bridge to the other side of Thanon Phayathai ( Phayathai Road ) is the Bonanza Mall.

The Suan Lum Night Bazaar is located on the site of a former military school in the open air and offers mainly clothes and souvenirs. Some restaurants and a beer garden with a tent and live music are also available. Attractions

The Lumpini Park ( สวน ลุ ม พิ นึ, Suan Lumphini ) is the "green lung" of Pathum Wan. Its name derives from the birthplace of the Buddha ago.
