Pathum Wan District
Pathum Wan ( Thai ปทุมวัน ) is one of the 50 districts ( Khet ) of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Pathum Wan is located in the eastern part of the city center. It is bordered on the north by Rama I Road ( Thanon Phra Ram 1) and in the south of the Rama IV Road ( Thanon Phra Ram 4). It is one of the central business districts in Bangkok.
Geography
Pathum Wan is bounded on the north by the Khlong Saen Saep, in the east of the railway line Makkasan - Khlong Toei, in the south of the Rama IV Road and to the west by Krung Kasem Khlong Phadung.
The neighboring districts are from clockwise from the north: Ratchathewi (on the other bank of Khlong Saen Saep ), Watthana, Khlong Toei, Sathon, Bang Rak, Pom Prap Sattru Phai (on the other bank of Khlong Krung Kasem Phadung ) and Dusit.
History
The district Pathum Wan was created in 1914. It is named after Wat Pathum Wanaram (Temple of the Lotus Forest ), a Buddhist temple ( Wat ), and the nearby Sra Pathum Palace - (lotus pond palace ). Both plants are due to an arrangement of King Mongkut (Rama IV ). The name goes back to the myriad of lotus flowers, the Khlong Saen Saep at that time covered the water.
Shopping centers
Pathum Wan is well known for its shopping centers. The oldest of these centers is the Siam Center in 1973, which was later expanded by the Siam Discovery Center and was expanded in December 2005, again by the Siam Paragon.
The shopping center with the most visitors is the Maboonkrong Centre ( MBK ). Here you can fashionable clothes, mobile phones and souvenirs at low prices. Connected to the MBK over a bridge to the other side of Thanon Phayathai ( Phayathai Road ) is the Bonanza Mall.
Siam Square is another shopping area: it consists of many smaller buildings with many streets where the shops are. It is mostly visited by teenagers. In addition, there are three major, traditional cinema: Siam, Lido and Scala. In addition to the shops here are also numerous schools that prepare them for the national exam, so that here during the evening hours and on weekends, many students go back and forth.
The Suan Lum Night Bazaar is located on the site of a former military school in the open air and offers mainly clothes and souvenirs. Some restaurants and a beer garden with a tent and live music are also available. Within the bazaar there in the evenings performances of Joe Louis Theatre, which showcases the traditional Thai puppetry.
Other shops larger scale include Central World Plaza (formerly World Trade Center called ), Big C, Narayana Phan, Sogo Department Store, Gaysorn Plaza and Central Chitlom.

Attractions
The Lumpini Park ( สวน ลุ ม พิ นึ, Suan Lumphini ) is the "green lung" of Pathum Wan. Its name derives from the birthplace of the Buddha ago. In the park there are two lakes that are ideal for boating. After dawn you can observe many people in their Tai Chi exercises here. On weekends you can borrow straw mats, on which you can relax on the shores of the lakes. Numerous food stalls then offer their wares for sale. West of the park, the Lumphini Boxing Stadium, where the traditional Thai boxing is listed. Northeast of Lumphini Park is also a racecourse, the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. Here Saturday horse races are held.
A larger area of the district Pathum Wan is taken by several organizations: In addition to the Mahboonkrong shopping center ( " MBK " ) this is the Chulalongkorn University, the oldest university in Thailand. The Museum of imaging technologies is located in the Faculty of Sciences and houses a large collection of old and modern cameras. Located next to the University is the Chulalongkorn Hospital and the Red Cross Thailand ( Thai Red Cross). Attached to the grounds of the Red Cross snake farm is open, the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute ( Sathan Saovabha ). One of the main attractions of Pathum Wan is the Jim Thompson House. It forms a complex of beautiful wooden houses in old Thai style. Here lived James HW Thompson, an American entrepreneur who made the Thai silk industry revived and known in the West. It is now a museum.
The Art and Culture Centre Bangkok is located on the corner of Rama I Road ( Thanon Phra Ram 1) and Phayathai Road ( Thanon Phayathai ), it shows since its opening in July 2008 changing exhibitions of contemporary art.
The Erawan Shrine is a sacred place where many people come together to pray and express their wishes for the future. It brings back flowers, wooden elephants or other objects, if the request has been fulfilled. In this case, one can also perform a traditional dance. Traffic
Hua Lamphong is the main station of Bangkok. Here go the trains in all directions from within Thailand.
Both major mass transit in Bangkok operate the district Pathum Wan. The Bangkok Metro (MRT ) stations offers in Hua Lamphong Sam Yan Si Lom Lumphini and on along the southern county line.
The Bangkok Skytrain ( BTS) has a station Siam, which serves as a transfer station between the Si Lom - line and the Sukhumvit Line here. Other stations in Pathum Wan also include National Stadium and Ratchadamri (Si Lom - line) and Chitlom and Ploenchit ( Sukhumvit Line ).
Fast boats on the canal Khlong Saen Saep operate on the northern border of the district. The pier Pratu Nam (at the Ratchadamri Road, near Central World ) is the central station of the water bus network. From here, the western line to Phan Fa Bridge is in the district Pom Prap Sattru Phai (near Golden Mount in the northeastern part of Bangkok's old town) and the eastern line to Wat Si Bunrueang The northeast district Bang Kapi. The Siam -junction ( Siam Discovery, MBK, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre ) is the investor Hua Chang (first stop on the western line), Jim Thomson's house by the investor Ban Krua Nuea ( West 2 ) distance.
Education
In Pathum Wan is the main campus of Chulalongkorn University, the oldest university in Thailand. Also, here maintains the Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan -ok a hub campus named Uthenthawai.
