Renate Gietl

Renate Gietl ( born January 10, 1982 in Brixen ) is a former Italian Naturbahnrodlerin. It was washed twice world champion in single-seat and in the team competition and won in the season 2004/2005 the overall World Cup in the single-seater. Her older sister Christa was also Naturbahnrodlerin.

Career

Gietl starting from the 1999/2000 season in the World Cup. She could classify in their first season in all races in the top six and reached number two in Stein an der Enns their first podium. In the overall World Cup this meant fourth place. In the same year she became European Junior Champion in Obergurgl. In the 2000/2001 season Gietl fell with only three top - 10 finishes back to 13th in the overall World Cup. But they won behind her compatriot Sonja Steinacher the silver medal at the 2001 World Championships in Stein an der Enns, where she also won bronze in the inaugural team competition and the silver medal at the European Junior Championships in Tiers.

In the 2001/2002 season Gietl reached its second podium finish of the sac. A week later, she celebrated on January 20, 2002 in Huttau her first World Cup victory. In the overall ranking, it achieved so back to fourth place. At the Junior World Cup 2002 in Gsies Gietl won the bronze medal, but at the European Championships in Frantschach they only reached eighth place. At the beginning of the season 2002/2003 Gietl celebrated her second World Cup victory in parallel competition in Fie. After that, they, however, did not come in the top three and they finished third in the overall classification with equal points with the Austrian Marlies Wagner sixth. In the 2003 World Cup in Železniki they also reached only the sixth.

With two second places in Moscow and Herzogenaurach and three fourth places Gietl scored third overall in the World Cup season 2003/2004. At the European Championships 2004 in Huttau they remained as seventh but behind their World Cup results, and for the third time in a row at championships without a medal. Her biggest success in the World Cup scored Gietl in the season 2004/2005. She won four of six races of the season and becoming the first and only time in her career, the World Cup. At the World Championship 2005 in Laces, she won two bronze medals in the single-seater and with the team.

In the following years, Gietl beaten only by the Russian Ekaterina Lawrentjewa the overall World Cup beaten. In the season 2005/2006 she reached five podiums and thus behind Lawrentjewa who won all six races of the season, finished second overall. Always get a victory and another four podiums scored Gietl in the seasons 2006/2007 and 2007/2008, but the overall World Cup secured again the Russian. At the European Championships in 2006 and 2008 in Obergurgl in Olang Gietl won bronze medals. At the 2007 World Championships in Grande Prairie it remained in the single-seater in fourth just behind the Medaillenrägen, but with Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara, she won silver in the team competition.

Also in the World Cup season 2008/2009 remained Gietl despite three wins, one more than Lawrentjewa, and three third places in the World Cup behind the Russian. At the 2009 World Championships in Moos in Passeier Gietl was three hundredths of a second faster than Lawrentjewa and thus became the first world champion in single-seaters. Previously, she had already won together with Anton Blasbichler, Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara the gold medal in the team competition.

In the 2009/2010 season Gietl reached with two wins, two second and two third places for the fifth time in a row the second place in the overall World Cup behind Lawrentjewa. At the European Championships 2010 in St. Sebastian, she won bronze in the single-seater and silver with the team. In the season 2010/2011 she was initially three times and third once Second, before she won the last two races in each case before Ekaterina Lawrentjewa. Since Lawrentjewa but had won the first four races, Gietl was in the World Cup again second behind the Russian. At the World Cup 2011 in Obergurgl Gietl could repeat their double success of two years ago. For the second time she was in front of the Russian Ekaterina Lawrentjewa world champion in single seater and the second time they won with Anton Blasbichler, Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara as Team Italy I the gold medal in the team competition.

In the season 2011/2012 Gietl finished with four second and two third places again finished second overall behind Lawrentjewa that decided all six World Cup races of winter for themselves. At the European Championships 2012 in Novouralsk Gietl missed in single-seat and in the team competition as each Fourth barely a medal. In December 2012, just before the start of the World Cup season 2012/2013, Gietl announced her resignation.
