Satara district

The district Satara ( Marathi: सातारा जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. The city is the administrative center of the district of Satara. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 3,003,741 people, of whom 1,512,524 men and 1,491,398 women. In the years 2001-2011 the population thus grew by 6.94%. 82.87 % of the adult population could read Satara in 2011.

Population

The urban population accounts for only 18.99 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. Smaller minorities form the Buddhists and Muslims. In 2001, of 2,808,994 inhabitants, 2,533,359 Hindus ( 90.19 per cent), Buddhists 128 570 ( 4.58 per cent) and 125 661 Muslims ( 4.47 percent).

Strongest town inhabitants of the district is Satara with more than 100,000 residents. Other important cities with a population of more than 20,000 people are Karad, Phaltan, Wai, Satara Karanje Turf and Mhaswad.
