Schnepfau is a municipality in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with 468 inhabitants ( as at 31 December 2013).

Geography

Schnepfau is located in the back of the Bregenzerwald in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Bregenz southeast of Lake Constance to 734 meters.

47.5 % of the area is forested, 15.4 % of the area Alps. The three districts of the municipality on the right bank of the Bregenzerach are:

  • Hirschau
  • Schnepfau
  • Schnepfegg

Neighboring communities

The community Schnepfau borders four other municipalities in Vorarlberg, all of which are just as Schnepfau in the political district Bregenz. Clockwise, starting in the north, are the communities Bizau, Au, Mellau and Reuthe.

History

Schnepfau was first mentioned in 1280 as " Hirzowe et Snephowe ".

The Habsburgs ruled the areas in Vorarlberg changing of Tyrol and Further Austria from ( Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria, then back to Austria. For the Austrian state of Vorarlberg Schnepfau heard since the foundation in 1861. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.
