Seth Padelford

Seth Padelford ( born October 3, 1807 in Taunton, Massachusetts; † August 26, 1878 in Providence, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician ( Republican) and 1869-1873 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and political rise

After leaving school, Padelford was in the retail industry and as an alderman in Providence. In this city he was also a member of the school committee; later he became a deputy in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. Seth Padelford was a staunch opponent of slavery. Before the Civil War he assisted in Kansas, the movement for the abolition of this institution. In 1860 he ran unsuccessfully for the post of governor of Rhode Iceland. In 1863 and 1864 he was elected Vice- Governor of his respective state.

Governor of Rhode Iceland and other CV

In 1869, Seth Padelford was elected governor of his state. After three successful re- election in the following years he was able to stay in this office between 25 May 1869 to 27 May 1873. As governor, he pushed for an improved education policy. The corresponding budget has quadrupled during his tenure.

After the end of his governorship, he spent four years as a member of the Commission, which administered the sinking fund of the state. He was also involved in various public associations and organizations. Seth Padelford died in August 1878. He was married twice and had two children.
