Sievierodonetsk

Sjewjerodonezk (Ukrainian Сєвєродонецьк until 2008 also Сєверодонецьк / Sjewerodonezk; Russian Северодонецк / Sewerodonezk ) is a city in the North of Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine, with about 120,000 inhabitants ( 2012).

It is an important center for the chemicals industry in Ukraine. A chemical combine ( azote ) and a working class neighborhood Lischimstroj ( Лисхимстрой ) was founded in 1934. In 1950 the settlement was renamed Sewerodonezk and received city rights in 1954.

Geography

Sjewjerodonezk located about 70 km northwest of Luhansk and 100 km northeast of the city lying in the neighboring Donetsk Oblast Donetsk. The city lies on the Seversky Donets, the largest tributary on the right side of the Don.

Sjewjerodonezk divided administratively next to the city proper or in the settlements of urban type Boriwske ( Борівське ) Woronowe ( Воронове ) Metjolkine ( Метьолкіне ) and Syrotyne ( Сиротине ), the villages Borowe ( Борове ) Wojewodiwka ( Воєводівка ) and Oskoloniwka ( Осколонівка ) as well as the settlements Lisna dacha ( Лісна Дача ) Pawlohrad ( Павлоград ) and Synezkyj ( Синецький ).

Sjewjerodonezk has an airport, which is no longer used commercially since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Near Sjewjerodonezk is a train station ( Lisichansk 4 km), for trains to travel from Kiev, Moscow, St. Petersburg and regional trains. In the city there is a bus station with national and international connections. For urban transport, there is public transportation, which consist of several bus and trolley bus lines.
