Stefan Nimke

Stefan Nimke (born 1 March 1978 in Hagenow ) is a German racing cyclist, specializing in short-term disciplines.

Sports career

Nimke began in 1987 in Schwerin with cycling. In 1994 he took his first national junior title. 1996, followed by the first German Championship titles in the professional sector. From 2000 to 2008 he drove for the "XXL gas team," since the "Track Cycling Team Mecklenburg -Vorpommern".

At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney he won the silver medal in the 1000 -meter time trial on the track. After the French team the gold medal was revoked for violation of the reporting requirements of the WADA by Grégory Baugé in January 2012 because it was officially classified as a doping offense, the gold medal went to the German trio. In the UCI Track World Championships 2012 Melbourne Nimke won his sixth world championship gold and his fourth in the time trial; yet he presented with a time of 1.00,082 minutes on an unofficial lowland record, as the Frenchman Arnaud Tournant had the existing world record in 2001 situated in the high altitude of La Paz at 3,600 meters.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London Nimke was nominated for the team sprint. However, shortly before the start of the competition he had to cancel his start because of injury, his place was taken by Robert Förstemann. It would have been his fourth Olympics and should be climax and the end of his career.

After Stefan Nimke had announced his retirement from competitive sports after the Games, he declared in November 2012 his international retirement. He plans to remain active until at least until the German railway Championships 2013.

Pilot on the tandem

Since 2013, Nimke prepares together with the visually-impaired driver Kai Kruse, acting as pilot on the tandem for the 1000 -meter time trial at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro before.

Stefan Nimke was honored with induction into the Hall of Fame of the European Cycling Union Union Européenne de Cyclisme.

Professional and family

Stefan Nimke is the most successful German racing cyclist since the late 1990s; he goes for the "Track Cycling Team Mecklenburg -Vorpommern". He is married and has two children. He was a sports soldier in the German army in the sports promotion group in Frankfurt ( Oder). Since September 2008, he trained as a mean police officers at the Fachhochschule for public administration, police and judiciary in Güstrow.
