History

The first traces of human settlement date back to the Neolithic period. In the cave of Sainte- Guimelle tombs and pottery were discovered from this era. The first documentary mention in 1253 tells of a small castle, around which the town has developed. The name of the place ( Provençal Talhada, translated: " intersect ", " column " ) indicates quarry activities. 1269 awarded the Provence Count and King of Naples Charles I the castle and the surrounding estates as a fief to Imbert and William of Sabran. 1338 was the fief of Hugh of Marle, whose son George was Seneschal of Provence. George Marle defeated in 1398 in Pertuis troops of the Viscount Raymond of Turenne, who fled to southern Luberon and ravaged many lands there. As a result, the Benedictines of Saint -Jean Baptiste left the monastery of Taillades and hid in Cavaillon. 1455 sold the son of the seneschal Roland de Marle, his property to Gaucher de Forcalquier, the Bishop of Gap. In 1619 the medieval fortress was replaced by a new castle that belonged to the owner of Taillades until the Revolution. Mid-nineteenth century began the depopulation of the old town.
