Tiraque Province

Tiraque is one of sixteen provinces in the central part of the Bolivian department of Cochabamba.

Location

The province extends from the heights of the Bolivian Cordillera Oriental down in the tropical lowlands of the Río Chapare. It is bordered to the west by the province of Chapare, to the southwest by the province Punata, to the south by the province of Arani, and on the east by the province of Carrasco.

The province extends approximately between 16 ° 53 'and 17 ° 31' south latitude and 65 ° 37 ' and 66 ° 18 ' west longitude, its extent from east to west is 50 kilometers from north to south, 65 km.

Population

The population of the province Tiraque has risen in the past two decades by about half:

44.8 percent of the population are younger than 15 years, the literacy rate in the province is 70.8 percent. (1992)

0.4 percent of the population speak Spanish, Quechua 96.2 percent, and 3.0 percent Aymara. (1992)

88.2 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 69.1 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

84.7 percent of the population are Catholics, 13.1 percent are Protestant (1992).

Structure

The Tiraque province is divided into two Municipalities since 2009:

  • Municipio Tiraque - 20,772 inhabitants ( 2001 census )
  • Municipio Shinahota - 14,245 inhabitants
