Topography of the province of Utrecht

The Utrecht province with its capital in Utrecht is the smallest province of the Netherlands. It lies in the east of the metropolitan area Randstad, which constitutes the western part of the Netherlands.

Their importance lies primarily in the areas of service and administration. There are, among others, in the city of Utrecht the head office of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS ) ( Dutch Railways ), a number of banks and ( in the second largest city of the province, Amersfoort ) insurance companies.

Geography

The province is located in the center of the Netherlands. The West consists of polders, the northeastern half is a wooded area with sandy hills that are up to 50-69 meters high. It bears the name Utrecht Ridge ( " Utrecht Hills ").

In the north there was a access to the Zuider Zee, which today is limited to the Eemmeer, which is cut off by the IJsselmeer Flevoland earlier in Bunschoten.

History

For the first time it was mentioned as an area of Utrecht in 1375 in a document. Originally, it was church area ( Bishopric of Utrecht: Dutch: 't Sticht, in the dialect of the province ' t bite). Together with Overijssel (then: Over Sticht ), the upper pin, Utrecht, the Low pin is being administered by the bishops of Utrecht as imperial princes. In the many conflicts between Holland and funds the Utrecht bishops were mostly on the Dutch side. In the Eighty Years' War, the States-General took power.

Its current structure, the province since 1814.

Economy

In 2006, was the regional gross domestic product per capita, expressed in purchasing power standards, at 156.1 % of the average of the EU27.
