Valeriy Brumel

Valeri Nikolayevich Brumel (Russian Валерий Николаевич Брумель; born April 14, 1942 in Tolbusino in Chita, † January 26, 2003 in Moscow) was a Soviet athlete in the high jump discipline.

Brumel won the 1960 at the Summer Olympic Games in Rome in the silver medal with a height of 2.16 meters at the same height as the Olympic champion Robert Schawlakadse, who also took to the Soviet Union. Third was the reigning world record holder John Thomas. Brumel 1964 Olympic champion at the Summer Games in Tokyo with a height of 2.18 meters in front of John Thomas, who also crossed 2.18 meters. Between the two Olympic medals succeeded Brumel to win in Belgrade at 2.21 meters the European title in 1962. He was from 1961 to 1963 champion of the USSR and was three times by the Polish Press Agency Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP ) to Europe's Athlete of the Year chosen.

From 1961 to 1971 he held the world record six times and was able to improve it in this time. The last high-water mark was 2.28 meters, which he crossed in 1963. 1965 Brumel suffered a leg injury in a traffic accident that ended his career in fact. For six years he tried to build on his top form, and it only managed to skip 2.06 meters.

Subsequently, he tried his hand as an author of non-fiction books and publications in addition to a novel, a drama, a libretto of an operetta, all of which were reflected in his own biography. He was the divorced husband of the dressage rider Jelena Petuschkowa.

The grave of Brumel is located on Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery.
