Vehicle registration plates of Oman

The current license plate of the Sultanate of Oman has been around since 2001.

Current classification system

On 6 January 2001, a new license plate system was established. The old mark could be used by the end of February 2002.

Indicator for private and commercial vehicles

Flag for privately used vehicles are designed in black letters on a yellow reflective surface. Commercial vehicles, taxis, driving schools and car wearing a red sign with black writing. You are in the dimensions 521 x 114 mm and 362 x 114 mm (probably since 2003 305 x 114 mm). As the DIN font is used in 1451 of appeal for the Arabic numerals.

Both license plate types are divided into three parts. On the right side is the word Oman in Arabic script (Arabic: عمان, ʿ Umān DMG ). In the central part of the shield are one or two letters in ( above) Arabic and (bottom) the Latin alphabet. The left part is an up to five-digit number in Arabic numerals. All new plates carry a small security hologram.

According to official figures, the letter combinations for privately used vehicles are assigned arbitrarily, but there are signs that the first letter continues for the issuing region ( mintaqa, Pl manatiq ) or the issuing government ( muhafaza, Pl muhafazat ) is. Only the following points are awarded: A (Arabic ا, â DMG ), B (Arabic: ب, DMG b ), D (Arabic: د, DMG d ), H (Arabic ح, DMG h ), M (Arabic م, DMG m), R (Arabic ر, DMG r ), S (Arabic س, DMG s ), W (Arabic و, DMG w ), Y (Arabic ي, DMG y).

The following points are provided for certain types of approval:

  • K (Arabic ك, DMG k), KA and KB for taxis
  • KK (Arabic ك ك, DMG kk) for vehicles used for the carriage of passengers comprising more than 12 seats or that are intended for the combined passenger and freight transport
  • T (Arabic ط, DMG t) for self-directed and car hire
  • TT (Arabic ط ط, DMG TT ) for driving school vehicles

The letter K (Arabic ك, DMG k) is reserved as second letter is for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t. The same applies for the letter L (Arabic ل, DMG l), which is however also used for motorcycle license plates.

The letters are assigned in the following order: first indicator (eg, Y) awarded with only one letter. Is this number range exhausted, license plate will be issued with two letters. It starts with the double letters (eg YY) and then in descending alphabetical order ( eg, YW, YS, YR, YM, YH, YD, YB, YA). The numbers are assigned sequentially in ascending order. License plates can be purchased at the registration office for a fee. Freed-up resources will be allocated after a certain waiting period.

Registration districts

Furthermore, in use: ر (R ) س (S) ص (S *), ط (T), ع ( ' ain ), ق (F), ك (K) ل (L ), ن (N ) ھ (H) و (W) and ى (Y).

Additional Features

In addition to the indicator for private vehicles following further feature types exist:

  • Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman: An oval - each divided into a white, red and green segment - where the digit 1 is in black in Arabic script, framed by two red royal emblems on golden background.
  • Members of the Royal Family: A Oval - each divided into a white, red and green segment - on which a sequential number from 10 to 99 in Arabic script stands on a white background.
  • Royal Court (English Royal Divan of the Court ): An oval - each divided into a white, red and green segment - with number
  • Royal Court affairs: In the middle of a serial number in black in Arabic script standing on three horizontal bands of white, red and green.
  • Armed Forces: A black sign with white letters with the armed forces sign on the left.
  • Taxis or professional registration: White lettering on a red background.
  • Self-paced car rental: Black ink on a white background.
  • Commercial vehicles: White text on black background.
  • Private vehicles used: Black lettering on a yellow background with a black border. Detailed Description: see above.
  • Export Indicator: White characters on a blue background with a white border. Sign is divided into three parts. On the right side of the lettering Oman ( above in Arabic, below the Latin alphabet). In the middle below the abbreviation EXP for export and also the Arabic word (Arabic تصدير, DMG taṣdīr ) for export. On the left side above a consecutive five-digit number and down the four-digit year number of export (for example, 2008) in Latin and Arabic script. Right side of the year is the Omani national emblem as a small black print; left as a small hologram.
  • Motorcycles: Since 2001 yellow signs with black lettering and border in the size of 195 mm × 130 mm are issued. On the left side there are two Arabic letters. The first refers to the district in which the motorcycle was admitted, followed by a L (Arabic ل, DMG l). Superimposed are the corresponding Latin letters. On the right side is the Arabic word Oman and about one to four stellinge number in Latin and Arabic script.
