Zainsk

Sainsk (Russian Заинск; Tatar Зәй / Zəy ) is a city in the Republic of Tatarstan (Russia) with 41 803 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 290 km east of the capital of Republic of Kazan near the confluence of the rivers Stepnoi Sai ( Sai steppe, here dammed up to a small dam ) and Lesnoi Sai ( Sai forest ) to Sai, a left tributary of the Kama.

Sainsk is the Republic of subordinated administratively directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1956 Akbasch ( at Bugulma ) Naberezhnye Chelny - Agrys.

History

Sainsk was 1652-1656 as a border fortress of Tsarism in Russia during the so-called Kamalinie ( Sakamskaja tscherta ), which was in between the Volga and the Kama mouth of the Ik. The name is derived from the river Sai, what alttatarisch simply means river.

With the construction of Sainsker thermal power station from 1956, the workers' settlement Nowy Sai originated ( New Sai, after the river ), which was awarded the 1962 status of urban-type settlement, was incorporated on April 5, 1978 with the old place Sainsk and under this name the municipal law lent got.

Culture and sights

From the old wooden fort from 1652 are preserved as remnants of earthworks, as well as some of the old buildings Sainsk how the Exaltation of the Cross Church ( Крестовоздвиженская церковь / Krestowosdwischenskaja Tserkov ) by in 1826.
