Together with the village, the settlement grew so quickly that they have already received city status in 1955 and became the administrative center of a Rajons. The newly elected city name has no historical reference to the original place and was only, as was the case in many other parts of the former Soviet Union, awarded in honor of the revolutionary leader Lenin.
