Želiv

Želiv ( German Seelau ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located ten kilometers west of Humpolec in a valley of the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands and belongs to the Okres Pelhřimov on. In the village the rivers Želivka and Trnavka flow together. With an altitude of 405 m above sea level. M. it is the lowest village in the district.

History

The place name comes from the old Bohemian Želevo and Žalov. The place was first mentioned in 1226, when Pope Honorius III. the Premonstratensian Chorrherrenstift Želiv his possessions confirmed. However, the area was settled AD in the 3rd and 4th century archaeological finds.

The original sovereign's place was in 1144 in the possession of the Prague bishops and belonged from 1148/49 to the Order of Premonstratensian. After the destruction and the decline of the monastery during the Hussite wars of the Bohemian King George of Podiebrad left the convent the men Trček of Lipa, where it was against the rule Kounice in 1599 to exchange with Prokop Dvorecký of Olbramovice. The Trček erected in the monastery called Trček Castle. After the monastery had been confiscated, it acquired the Premonstratensian Strahov Monastery back in 1623 for the Order.

After the replacement of patrimonial Želiv 1848 independent municipality.

Attractions

  • The biggest attraction of the village is the Premonstratensian monastery with the church Nativity of Mary, which was built according to plans by Johann Blasius Santini.
  • Cemetery church of St. Peter and Paul, whose origins go back to the year 1139.

Environment

In the area there are three reservoirs:

  • In just four kilometers southeast, dam Sedlice with 35 acres of water surface, the Hejlovka and Jankovský creek unite to Želivka.
  • Below this dam compensation waterworks was built in the years 1925 to 1928, the dam Vřesník at the Želivka. This reservoir is nearly nine acres in size and is located one kilometer east of the community.
  • The dam Trnavka with 84 hectares of water surface was built in the years 1977-1981. The barrage across the Trnavka and located one kilometer south of Želiv. Below the dam is a 524 meter long artificial water channel for sporting events.
