Special events

After 1925, 1943 and 1959, this was the fourth final, where a replay was required. After the first encounter Monaco had secured the championship in the Division 1. In the second edition of the final match Lyon then missed the chance of more than Polak missed a penalty on Hernandez.

The low audience figures for both games were related to a sporting and financial crisis that gripped the French football since about 1960, and covered the football club as well as the national team. The last cup final with more than 50.000 spectators had taken place in 1958, and it took until 1971 before at least the 40,000- mark was exceeded again.
