2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup

The UEFA Intertoto Cup 2006 brought about some changes. New, there were only three instead of five qualifying rounds and qualified eleven teams for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup (instead of three teams that qualify for the first round).

The Italian Football Federation gave up his place due to the scandal in Serie A. Instead allowed France, represented by AJ Auxerre appoint a second representative who occupied this place in the third round.

The German starter for the Intertoto Cup in 2006 was Hertha BSC, one of eleven winners who qualified for the UEFA Cup. Austria sends SV Ried, Switzerland Grasshopper Club Zurich in the race. For Luxembourg, the CS started Grevenmacher in the Intertoto Cup. Liechtenstein had no right to start.

Zurich and Ried went into round 2, round 3 in Berlin; Grevenmacher began already in the first round of the Intertoto Cup.

To keep the travel costs for the clubs low, all the teams were based on geographical and logistical reasons, divided into three groups: Northern, Central and Southern Europe. To compensate for the odd number of participants in the groups were considered for the competition in 2006 following changes: Luxembourg (from Round 1 ) and Belgium (from Round 3 ) were among Central Europe and Hungary ( from Round 2) to southern Europe.
