The Rijksweg 31 ( Abbreviation: RW 31) - Short Form: Autosnelweg 31 ( Abbreviation: A31) / autoroute 31 ( Abbreviation: N31 ) - is a Dutch highway that connects the village of Zurich on Harlingen and Leeuwarden with Drachten. Only between Harlingen and Leeuwarden the Rijksweg 31 is a highway, the remaining sections are roads that are built partly on highways. Moreover, the A31 one of the few highways, which is not connected directly in the Netherlands with other highways.

Hook from Leeuwarden

As hooks of Leeuwarden the section of the A31 between the junction Marssum and the intersection is designated by the N32. There are several planning for the expansion as a motorway. Here, a new bridge over the Van Harinxmakanaal must be built addition. The connection point Marssum and the junction with the N32 should, according to the plans, be converted into a Knooppunt. The municipality of Leeuwarden approved the construction of the Knooppunt Werpsterhoek ( N32 ) on August 31, 2009.

Wâldwei

As we Wâldwei the section between Leeuwarden Hemriksein ( N32 ) and the Knooppunt Drachten called. Between 2003 and 2008, this section was expanded to 2x2 lanes and has since about 5 exits. The largest part of the construction work was the construction of the new bridges Langdeel and doubling the Fonejachtbrug. On 21 January 2008, the Rijkswaterstaat handed over to the transport section.

Drachten - Emmen

Behind Drachten, the N31 goes further than N381 in the direction of Emmen.

There are plans to expand the section between Klazienaveen and Drachten to four lanes.
