Borex

Borex is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Borex situated at 470 meters above sea level. M., 5 km west of the district town of Nyon (air line). The village is located on the gently sloping to the southeast plateau at the foot of the Jura, west of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​2.0 km ² large municipality territory, which includes a section at the foot of the Jura. The municipality extends from the river bottom Boiron de Nyon northward over the built-up area of Borex to the hallway En Caudray, in the 511 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. From the municipality surface 1997 18 % came from settlements, 2% of forest and woody plants and 80 % to agriculture.

To Borex include former hamlet of Petit Borex (482 m above sea level. M. ) northwest of the village, the resort of Les Tourniaux (471 m above sea level. M. ) northeast of Borex as well as some individual farms. The neighboring communities of Borex in the West Crassier, in the south Arnex -sur -Nyon, in the east Eysins, northeast Signy- Avenex, in the north- north-east and north Grens Chéserex.

Population

With 877 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Borex one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 74.7 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 10.5 % in German and 7.9 % English speaking (as of 2000). The population of Borex amounted in 1850 to 121 residents in 1900 to 168 inhabitants. After 1960 (201 inhabitants ) continued a rapid increase in population with a quadrupling of the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

Economy

Borex was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. East of the village wine production, otherwise prevails in the fertile soil before cultivation. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, Borex has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work primarily in Nyon and Geneva.

Traffic

The community is located near the main road from Nyon to Divonne- les- Bains in France. The motorway connection Nyon on the A1 ( Geneva -Lausanne ) is just 3 km from the village. By Postbus course, which runs from Nyon to Coppet, Borex is connected to the public transport network. At the 1905-62 operated railway line from Nyon via Crassier to Divonne -les- Bains Borex had a small station.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1213 under the name Borrai; in the 19th century appeared the spelling Borrex. Since the first mention of Borex belonged to the rule Crassier. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the bailiwick of Nyon. After the collapse of the ancien régime Borex belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud.

Attractions

The remains of a Roman aqueduct that brought water from Divonne to Nyon ( Colonia Iulia Equestris ), are still visible. In the old town of Borex a farmhouse from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved. Borex does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Crassier.
