Givrins

Givrins is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Givrins is located on 546 m above sea level. Level, 6 km north- northwest of the district main town Nyon ( straight line ). The village is located on the lower Jura south slope, east of Taleinschnitts the Colline, in a scenic location around 170 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

Population

With 917 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Givrins one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 76.2 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 10.1 % in English and 10.0 % in German (as of 2000). The population of Givrins amounted in 1850 to 317 residents in 1900 to 299 inhabitants. Economy

History

The municipal area traces of settlement from the Roman period and early medieval tomb were discovered. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1154 under the name Geurins, later, the names appeared Giuriacum ( 1155 ), Gyvrins ( 1387 ), Gevryn ( 1517) and Giurins. The place name derives probably from the Burgundian personal names Giverius.

Givrins shelter since the Middle Ages the rule Genolier. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Givrins came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Nyon. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Nyon.

Attractions

The Church of Givrins was built in 1964; the place belongs since 1840 to the parish Genolier. In the center a few farm houses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
