Grens

Grens is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Grens is at 496 m above sea level. M., 4 km west-north- west of the district town of Nyon (air line). The village is located on the inclined slightly to the southeast plain at the foot of the Jura, at the foot of La Dole.

Population

With 350 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Grens is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the residents 82.6 % are French, 8.2 % English speaking and 4.8 % in German (as of 2000). The population of Grens amounted in 1850 to 130 residents in 1900 to 155 inhabitants. After 1970 (166 inhabitants ) continued rapid population growth, with a doubling of the population within 30 years.

Economy

Grens was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Today, agriculture is focused on agriculture, close to the village there are two small vineyards. History

Finds of bricks from the Roman period indicate an early settlement of the municipality. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1164 under the name Graiens, already in 1202 appeared today's spelling and 1212 the name Granz. The former Church of Grens was under the patronage of the Cistercian abbey Bonmont since the Middle Ages. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Grens came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Nyon. It was under the reign Gingins. After the collapse of the ancien régime Grens belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Nyon.
