Founex
Founex is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.
Geography
Founex is located on 398 m above sea level. M., 15 km north -east of Geneva (air line). The village is located near the western shore of Lake Geneva on a slightly towards the lake sloping hillside.
The area of 4.8 km ² large municipality area includes a section on the western shore of Lake Geneva. The communal land extends from the lake westward across the riparian corridors and on the adjacent Höhenrücken.Ganz in the west, the area includes a portion of the little valley of the brook Greny. The highest elevation of 475 m above sea Founex is. M. reached on the height between the Valley of Versoix and Geneva. From the municipal area in 1997 accounted for 30% settlements 2% of forest and woody plants and 68 % to agriculture.
To Founex include the hamlet Châtaigneraie (452 m above sea level. M. ) on Greny, numerous single-family homes and villas quarters as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Founex are Coppet, Commugny, Chavannes -de- Bogis and Bogis- Bossey in the Canton of Vaud and Celigny, an exclave of the Canton of Geneva.
Population
With 3145 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Founex belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 64.2 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 14.3 % in English and 7.0 % German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Founex amounted in 1850 to 246 residents in 1900 to 374 inhabitants. After 1960 (693 inhabitants ) continued a rapid increase in population with a quadrupling of the number of inhabitants within 40 years.
Economy
Founex was until the mid 20th century embossed mainly by agriculture village. To this day, many relatively percentage employed in the primary sector. Close to the village there are several wine regions, on the fertile soils of the remaining agricultural land mainly agriculture is operated. More jobs are in the manufacturing and service sectors. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many working population commuters who work mainly in Geneva. In Châtaigneraie is located in the buildings of the Ecole Nouvelle founded in 1908 since 1951, the Ecole International of Geneva.
Traffic
The community is a very good transport developed. It lies just off the main road 1 which runs along the lake to Lausanne from Geneva. The motorway connection Coppet on the A1 ( Geneva -Lausanne ) is just 2 km from the village. On April 14, 1858, the railway line from Morges was taken to Coppet in operation, the railway station of Founex is however currently not used anymore. Châtaigneraie is connected by the postal Car Course, which runs from Nyon to Coppet to the network of public transport.
History
At Le Gachet traces of a Roman settlement and a milestone were found. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1224 under the name Fosnay 1251 appeared the name Founai. Founex belonged in the Middle Ages to the first possession of the Abbey of Saint -Maurice and arrived around 1270 to the barony in 1484 to the rule Coppet.
With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Nyon. The dependent Cistercian monastery in the 13th century Bonmont Châtaigneraie formed together with the hamlet of Le Gachet to 1764 an independent municipality. It was then united with Founex. After the collapse of the ancien régime Founex belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Nyon.
Attractions
In Pré Claudy near the shores of Lake Geneva is a chapel. Founex heard since the Reformation to the parish Commugny.
