Coppet

Coppet is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Coppet lies on 377 m above sea level. M., in the extreme southwest of Vaud, 13 km north -east of Geneva (air line). The village is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, south of the mouth of the creek Greny.

The area of ​​only just 1.9 km ² large municipality area comprises a narrow section on the western shore of Lake Geneva. The communal land extends from the shore on either side of the mouth of the Greny westward across the flat riparian strips down to the adjacent ridge. Here is 425 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Coppet. From the municipality surface 1997 58 % came from settlements, 4% forest and shrubs, 37% to agriculture and slightly less than 1% was unproductive land.

The historic center of Coppet is surrounded by a green belt. The number of new single-family homes and villas roosts are located mostly at the edge of the municipal area and add on to the settlements of the neighboring communities Tannay, Commugny and Founex.

Population

With 2855 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Coppet is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 71.1 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 10.5 % in English and 7.3 % German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Coppet amounted in 1850 to 471 residents in 1900 to 561 inhabitants. After 1960 (774 inhabitants ) continued a rapid increase in population by tripling the number of inhabitants within 40 years.

Economy

Coppet has long been an agrarian embossed town. From the 14th to the 19th century, a sand quarry was exploited. In the course of time, some industry especially since the end of the 18th century watchmaking developed. Today, agriculture has only a slight importance; there is something viticulture and agriculture in the area. Jobs are in the business and especially in the services available. In recent decades, Coppet has grown thanks to its lovely location on Lake Geneva into a residential community. Most workers are commuters ( 60 %) who work mainly in Geneva. Coppet is the site of a secondary school.

Traffic

The community is a very good transport developed. It lies on the main road 1 which runs from Geneva along the lake to Lausanne. The motorway connection Coppet on the A1 ( Geneva -Lausanne ) is just 4 km away from the resort. On April 14, 1858, the railway line from Morges was taken to Coppet into operation on 21 April of the same year was the inauguration of the continuation after Versoix. History

Coppet can look back on a very long urban tradition. By the lake remains of a settlement from the Bronze Age have been found. In other traces from the Roman period are present: a milestone, a grave stele and remains of a villa. The origin of Coppet is a Hofgut that belonged to Commugny. The Lords of Thoire -Villars acquired the area in 1271 by the House of Savoy and founded the castle and the market town of Coppet, which was equipped from the outset with the city charter. The first written mention of the town was made in 1294 under the name Copetum, 1347 appeared the spelling Copet.

1314 was the domination of Coppet to the noble family Allamand. The Duke of Savoy led Coppet in 1484 with another feud together and raised it to the barony. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the town came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Nyon. The barony of Coppet, whose owners changed several times, but possessed the high justice. As a city on the border between the Alpes and the Pays de Gex benefited from Coppet transport industry. After the collapse of the ancien régime Coppet belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Nyon in 1803 and chief town of a circle. Under Germaine de Staël, who gathered during the Napoleonic period people from political, intellectual and literary merit on the lock, Coppet achieved European fame.

Attractions

The historic town of Coppet has a medieval townscape with many deciduous houses from the 16th century. The Protestant parish church is the former convent of the church founded in 1490 Dominican monastery. The building was constructed in 1500 in the Gothic Flamboyant style and contains a richly carved choir from the 16th century; comprehensive restoration took place in 1774 and 1927. The Maison Michel, a late -Gothic building, now houses the local museum.

Coppet Castle on the western edge of the town was rebuilt in 1767 on the site of the previous medieval building. It stands in a French park. Since 1948, the horseshoe-shaped building open to the public. It contains a wealth of furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries and also important portraits.
