Bruce Bernard Smith ( born June 18, 1963 in Norfolk, Virginia ) is a former American professional American football player. He played in the National Football League ( NFL) as a defensive end for the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins.

Playing career

College career

Bruce Smith studied from 1981 to 1984 at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he also played American football. Due to numerous injuries he received in his first year, only little use of time in his college football team. It was only in his second year, he received increasingly use time and has established itself as a starter. 1981 and 1984 could move Smith and his team in Bowl games. The Independence Bowl in 1984 could thus be obtained. Smith scored 16 Sacks in his penultimate year of study and 22 Sacks in his final year. In both years the game, he was elected an All-American. In 1984, he won the Outland Trophy. His jersey number is no longer assigned to his college.

Professional career

In 1985, Smith was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round in the first place. The Bills were one of the worst teams in the NFL. Already in his first game year he was appointed a regular in the defense of the Bills. Two years later, Marv Levy 's new coach of the team and the Bills has been developed into a top team in the American Football Conference. Until 1997, the Bills were a total of eight times to move into the play -offs. Smith played from 1990 to 1993 a total of four times in the Super Bowl. None of the games could be won. In 1990 they lost in Super Bowl XXV with nearly 20:19. In the years 1990 and 1996 he was elected to the NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Smith will be honored on the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame. After the NFL

Smith is married, has one child and lives in Virginia Beach. Bruce Smith designs and builds today with his own company apartment houses.
