History

Megalithic and other finds indicate a prehistoric settlement of the area. People of the Castro culture and nomads from North Africa, particularly Berbers settled here before the 9th century BC Celtic Lusitanians arrived here and fortified Iron Age villages moored.

The from the 2nd century BC ruling here Romans romanized the fortified settlements, and laid bridges and Roman roads to. After Alans, Suevi and Vandals decreased the area from 409 the Romans conquered Visigoths from 456, the present district area. From this epoch little striking findings have remained. From 711, the Moors conquered the peninsula. Various place names are from this period, in addition to excavation of oil mills, remained in the district, about Boassas or Saímes.

His most significant period witnessed the place during the Reconquista, of which a number of religious buildings testify, about the monastery and church of Tarouquela. Probably the first Portuguese king D.Afonso Henriques spent part of his youth in Santiago de Piães, where he was trained by Egas Moniz.

King Manuel I granted city rights in 1513 Cinfães.
