Corfu (regional unit)

The Regional District of Corfu (Greek Periferiaki Eonotita Kerkyra ) is the largest of the five regional districts of the Greek Ionian Islands. It consists of the island of Corfu with surrounding islands, the Diapontia Islands and the island of Paxi group. Council is based in the regional capital, Corfu.

The area was formed as a prefecture after the annexation of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864. With the administrative reform of 2010, the prefecture was dissolved and transferred its powers to the Ionian Islands and the newly assigned communities. Since then, the region consists of the two communities Corfu and Paxi. The Regional District of Corfu is 22 out of 41 deputies in the Regional Council of the Ionian islands, a majority of seats, but also has no political significance as a local authority.
