Czechoslovakia men's national ice hockey team

Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia

The Czechoslovak national ice hockey team was one of the best teams in the world, while the Soviet Union dominated the international ice hockey scene. The Czechs and Slovaks often fought with the Swedes for second place, and sometimes they were also able to defeat Soviet player. Between 1971 and 1986 they also won four times the Izvestia Cup.

1950 suffered the ice hockey team whose players a silver medal at the Winter Olympics in 1948 in St. Moritz were after two World Cup victories in 1947 and 1949 as well as the winner as a " golden generation ", a bitter setback: Shortly before their departure for the World Ice Hockey Championship 1950 in London were jailed 13 players of the national team. In a political show trial, they were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three months to 15 years for espionage and treason because they had allegedly planned not to return from their trip. Some players were broken health after imprisonment, others emigrated then. It took 22 years until a Czechoslovak national team became world champion in ice hockey.
