Dave Cowens

David William " Dave" Cowens ( born October 25, 1948 in Newport, Kentucky), known as Big Red, is a former American professional basketball player. Between 1970 and 1980 he played in the NBA for the Boston Celtics. In the 1982/83 season he was once again on in 40 games for the Milwaukee Bucks. Cowen is 2,06 m tall and played the position of center. Cowen was elected in 1971 Rookie of the Year and appointed to the NBA All- Rookie Team. He was nominated seven times during his career for the NBA All-Star Game. 1973 Dave Cowens was voted MVP of the regular season. He was by Bob Cousy and Bill Russell the third player the Celtics, who won this award. In the same year he was also elected as the MVP of the All- Star Games. 1976 Cowen was appointed team in the All-Defensive First. Together with John Havlicek and Jo Jo White, he was the most important player of the Celtics in the seventies. With his team Cowen won the championship in 1974 and 1976.

Even as a coach is operated Cowen, first as a player / coach for the Celtics (1978-1979), then as head coach for the Bay City Bombardier from the CBA (1984-1985), as assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs (1994-1996) and again as a head coach, this time for the Charlotte Hornets (1996-1999). On 27 May 2005 Cowen was appointed head coach and general manager of the Chicago Sky in the WNBA. He was also the first coach of the franchise 's history. 1991 Cowen was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
