The flag of the Dominican Republic is derived from the flag of the secret revolutionary society La Trinitaria. This 1838 by Juan Pablo Duarte formed and guided society, freed the Dominican Republic from the domination of Haiti.

Despite the war against the neighbor Duarte took the then- blue - red flag of Haiti as a model for his freedom flag, whose colors were in turn derived from the French tricolor.
