Garéoult
Garéoult ( Provençal Gareut or Garéut ) is a commune with 5549 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.
Geography
The village is at an average altitude of 300 m in the valley of Issole that crosses the village and surrounded by a wide, fertile plain which formed the bottom of a lake in the distant past. In the field of community Garéoult are the three sources of Saint Martin, Saint Médard and Clastre. Northeast of town, surrounded by low hills lies the vast forest area of the Bois de communal Garéoult.
History
The population of the municipal area in prehistoric times is controversial. In 1988, 90 tombs were discovered in the district, which are dated by some researchers to the Gallo - Roman period, while others consider them much younger and assume that the graves of the medieval period. In 1017 the village appears under the name Guardilis in the sources. It belonged to the dominion of the viscounts of Marseille, later to the Abbey of La Celle.
Attractions
- Originally built in the Romanesque style church dates from the years 1045 to 1048. On the steeple of Provencal Campanile was built in the mid 19th century. The old church was then partially demolished. To rebuild the church, the original stones from the demolition were used.
- Around the year 1500 a driven by animal power oil mill was built in the center of Garéoult, it has ceased operations in 1956.
- The oldest village fountain, the fountain was built four years ago in 1745.
