Origin and Meaning

Herbert is an old German bipartite personal name, especially spread by the name of St. Heribert of Cologne, Archbishop of Cologne ( 10-11. Century. ) The name of Herbert, also Heribert, arose from the composition of the Old High German words " heri " army for warrior and " beraht " for shiny, bright, famous. It means as much as " the Brave ," " the Brave ," " the army in the glossy ", " the shining warrior " or " famous warrior ".

Dissemination

The name Herbert was a popular first name in Germany in the late 19th century. His popularity increased still, so that he was in the 1910s and 1920s often among the ten most common boy name of the corresponding age group. Then eased its spread, the late fifties she fell sharply. Since the late sixties, the name is hardly widespread.
