Injoux-Génissiat

Injoux - Génissiat is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Injoux - Génissiat is located on 556 m above sea level. M., about seven kilometers southwest of the town of Bellegarde -sur -Valserine (air line). The double municipality extends in the Basin of Bellegarde, a scenic location on the plateau of Michaille, about 220 meters above the Talniederung the Rhone, at the eastern foot of the Cret du Nu, a ridge of the French Jura.

History

The Rhone Valley in Génissiat was inhabited in prehistoric times, but the former location now flooded by the reservoir.

Since the 12th century Injoux formed a parish. Génissiat was in the 14th century the center of a dominion which belonged to the de Coucy family. Mentioned in a document of the place 1440 under the Latinized name Gignissiacus. For later times the names Genissia ( 1536) and Ginissie and Ginissiaz (1563 ) have survived. The village Craz appears around 1365 for the first time in the documents.

With effect from 1 January 1973, three previously independent municipalities Injoux, Génissiat and Craz merged to church today Injoux - Génissiat.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Laurent -et -Saint -Didier in Injoux was built in the Gothic style shapes and later modified several times. The Church of Craz originally gothic.
