Jason Curtis Newsted ( born March 4, 1963 in Battle Creek, Michigan) was from 1986 to 2001 the bassist for the metal band Metallica and from mid- 2002 to 2009 a permanent member of the Canadian thrash metal band Voivod. Career

Newsted was born as the son of an export manager. His mother worked in a center for the deaf as a teacher. At the age of 14 years Newsted received his first bass guitar. After the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona Newsted founded with three friends a metal band, which they initially called Dogz and later Flotsam and Jetsam. Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records was so excited since the discovery of the band that he gave her numerous appearances in Arizona as the opening act.

After the accidental death in 1986 by Cliff Burton Newsted was the new bassist of Metallica part. In subsequent years, Newsted took with Metallica on five studio albums and was also responsible for the background vocals during intense tours next to the bass. On stage, he took over the role of many Anheizers and sought direct contact with the audience.

Beginning of 2001, Newsted left Metallica. At first he was back and neck problems through his years, excessive headbanging as the reason. In several interviews with Newsted and James Hetfield, Metallica's frontman, other reasons were much later. When Metallica Newsted was for years denied virtually any creative development. He was named in only three titles as co-composer - and one of them, " My Friend of Misery " ( Black Album ), was originally planned by him as an instrumental piece. He sought therefore in various side projects with fellow musicians compensation. When he finally wanted to professionalize his solo project Echo Brain, he was forbidden by the Hetfield. This led Newsted to great personal and artistic disappointment that eventually caused him to resign in favor of his side projects Metallica.

The first release of Echo Brain was released in March 2002 to Newsteds own label, Chophouse Records. In 2003 he played bass with Ozzy Osbourne, where he replaced Robert Trujillo, who had himself taken shortly before Newsteds position in Metallica. On April 4, 2009 Newsted joined for the first time since 2001, along with his old band Metallica marks the launch of the group into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and played along with their current bassist Robert Trujillo, the two songs "Master Of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman".

After Newsted occurred in December 2011 for all four concerts for thirty anniversary of Metallica, he decided in the sequence, again to form a band. Under the preliminary project name Newsted Heavy Metal Music an EP was produced plays on the Newsted both bass and sings. Early 2013 appeared the plain metal -titled mini-album with four pieces as a digital download. The project name was shortened to Newsted. On August 2, 2013, the debut album Heavy Metal Music, which reached the Top 20 on the album charts both in Germany, Austria and Switzerland appeared.
